Sick Sinus Syndrome

OVERVIEW:

This is an abnormal heart beat, often used to describe a number of different types of arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms) in a canine. Sick Sinus Syndrome is most commonly seen in female Miniature Schnauzers. It is characterized by sinoatrial node dysfunction and often includes atrioventricular node disease and bundle branch block. Sick Sinus Syndrome may cause low blood pressure, weakness, and fainting.  The Cocker Spaniel may display no symptoms of the disease other than the previously mentioned weakness and fainting.

DIAGNOSIS & TESTS:

Electrocardiogram findings include sinus bradycardia, sinus arrest, sinoatrial heart block, and asystole. The major sign is fainting.
